Project Overview
Emergency Iraq
In response to one of the most severe humanitarian crises in recent history, the Safavi Philanthropic Initiative joined efforts led by UNHCR to deliver first asylum relief to thousands of displaced families. The project focused on ensuring access to water and basic supplies for refugee populations across UNHCR-operated camps in Northern Iraq. Safavi’s support formed part of a larger mobilization of partners and private donors responding to the UNHCR’s emergency appeal.
This response came in the wake of escalating violence in December 2014, which displaced nearly 2 million Iraqis and saw an influx of over 228,000 Syrian refugees into the Kurdish regions of Iraq. At its height, 300–500 individuals were crossing daily from conflict zones such as Kobane into Iraq.
Beneficiary Profile
The initiative supported families who had fled armed conflict and were residing in camps managed by UNHCR. Beneficiaries included both Iraqi internally displaced persons and Syrian refugees, many of whom had crossed international borders seeking safety.
Safavi's Role
The Safavi Philanthropic Initiative contributed directly to UNHCR's emergency supply efforts, including the distribution of clean water containers and blankets. This support was part of a coordinated response involving other donors and public communiqués to encourage further contributions.
