Focus Area
Environmental conservation
Location
Northern Pakistan
Beneficiaries
Herders and their families living in snow leopard habitats
Safavi's Role
Partner-funded initiative through Snow Leopard Trust
Key Impact
175,000+ livestock vaccinated; 50% reduction in livestock mortality; 6,000 households supported
Project Overview

In remote snow leopard habitats, herding families rely almost entirely on their livestock for survival. Yet disease—not predators—is the leading cause of livestock loss, wiping out herds and livelihoods. This initiative supports the Snow Leopard Trust’s livestock vaccination and animal health training program, which addresses the critical gap in veterinary access. The program has dramatically improved herd survival and, in turn, strengthened coexistence between people and wildlife.
Beneficiary Profile
The initiative supports approximately 6,000 herding households across 19 communities in the Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces of Pakistan. These communities live in high-altitude, rugged terrain where access to veterinary services is minimal. Livestock is central to their economic stability, food security, and cultural traditions. Without intervention, the ripple effects of herd loss can lead to economic hardship and retaliatory harm against snow leopards.
Safavi's Role
Safavi supports this initiative by funding the work of the Snow Leopard Trust, a leading conservation organization operating across Central and South Asia. Through this partnership, Safavi helps deliver:
Vaccinations for livestock in remote mountain communities
Animal husbandry education and resources
Incentivized conservation agreements in which herders commit to protecting snow leopards and wild prey species
Strategic support to align community development with ecosystem restoration

Impact Achieved
The initiative has yielded powerful results:
Over 175,000 vaccines administered in a single year
Participating communities have seen up to 50% reduction in livestock mortality
Around 6,000 households now benefit from healthier herds and added income through livestock sales
The program fosters herd size management, reducing competition for natural resources and improving biodiversity
Herders sign conservation agreements, leading to a measurable decline in snow leopard retaliatory killings
Purpose & Signifigance
This initiative advances Safavi’s commitment to conservation through community-led solutions. By addressing the root causes of human-wildlife conflict, the program builds resilience in both people and ecosystems. It reflects Safavi’s belief in creating shared value—where economic security and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. Supporting this effort means standing for a world where coexistence isn’t just possible—it’s practical and sustainable.
Future Outlook
Safavi plans to continue supporting this model of conservation, with a focus on scaling it to additional communities and regions. The long-term goal is to create a replicable blueprint—one where livestock health, economic stability, and wildlife preservation move forward together. Expansion plans include increasing the reach of veterinary services and deepening conservation agreements to further safeguard endangered species and fragile ecosystems.
